Hawaii is known as the Garden Isle, but that abundance didn't happen by accident. While rainfall is plentiful on the north and interior, large portions of the island required control water flow to support agriculture. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, sugar plantations dominated Hawaii's economy to top crops alive year-round. Plantation owners engineered massive irrigation systems that redirected water from wet mountain regions to drier coastal plains. This required digging tunnels straight through volcanic rock, often by hand. These tunnels allowed water to bypass steep ridges and cliffs, delivering a steady flow to fields below. The people who built the tunnels, the irrigation tunnels were not built by machines alone. 1000s of laborers, many of them immigrants from Japan, China, the Philippines, Portugal, and Native Hawaiians work under dangerous conditions. Using picks, shovels, and basic explosives, they carved narrow passages through solid basalt. Workers faced havens, flooding, and limited ventilation. Some tunnels were only wide enough for a single person to pass through, these labors were rarely recognized for their work, yet their effort reshaped the island's agricultural future. Today, when people walk through or view these tunnels, they're witnessing the physical legacy of generations of workers whose hands shaped Hawaii. I'll be honest, I just was there earlier, last year, and I experienced this-a tubing ride from the top of the mountain, cruising through these tunnels. It was such a sight to see. For me, I'm claustrophobic, but the ride was-I have to say-invigorating. Oh wow, invigorating, huh? A Hawaiian would say that. Yeah, he would say that. That'd be me. That's the best of island music.
